When you’re standing in front of the mirror in a bridal boutique, trying on stunning wedding dresses, your mind's eye is naturally focused on wearing it down the aisle and during the vows and imagining how extraordinary you'll feel. What you’re almost certainly not thinking about is how on earth you’re going to navigate a standard wedding venue toilet cubicle three to four hours into your evening reception.


Yet, as the wedding morning prosecco flows and the evening’s celebrations get underway, nature will inevitably call, and you will need to make your way to the nearest bathroom.


If you’re wearing a gown with structured internal boning, a sweeping train, or layers of sumptuous lace and tulle, a trip to the toilet can feel like a delicate tactical operation, one that many feel they can't undertake alone. But fear not, there’s no need to panic, surrender your dignity, or recruit an army of bridesmaids just to go to the toilet.


Here is our ultimate, practical guide on how to use the toilet in your wedding dress comfortably, safely, and with (almost) total confidence.

How to Use the Toilet in Your Wedding Dress

Simple techniques to keep your dress pristine, your dignity intact, and your wedding day on track.


Method 1: The "Backwards Straddle" (Best for A-Line & Ball Gowns)

This is the absolute gold standard for most brides, particularly if you’re wearing a silhouette with a full skirt, such as an A-line or plus-size ball gown.


Instead of backing onto the toilet as you usually would, you simply walk straight in, face the wall, and sit down facing the flush handle.


Why it works: By facing the back of the toilet, all the fabric, petticoats, and train of your dress trail safely behind you into the cubicle, rather than hanging over the bowl or pooling on a potentially damp floor.


How to do it:

  1. Walk straight into the cubicle facing the toilet.

  2. Lift the front hem of your skirt up towards your chest.

  3. Straddle the seat (facing the wall/flush handle) and do what you need to do.


This toilet technique keeps the back of your wedding dress completely clear of danger and will allow you to use the bathroom all by yourself!



Method 2: The Bin Bag Trick (Best for Heavy, Layered Skirts)

If your gown features multiple layers of net, delicate lace edging, or a chapel-length train, gathering up that much fabric in your arms can feel like quite a workout. Enter: the trusty heavy-duty bin bag (or a large, sturdy carrier bag like the iconic blue IKEA bag).


Why it works: It neatly compresses all that voluminous fabric into a clean, self-contained pouch, keeping every single layer tucked away off the floor and clear of the toilet bowl and/or floor.


How to do it:

  1. Take a heavy-duty bin liner and cut a small hole in the centre of the bottom seam (just wide enough for your feet).

  2. Step into the bag with your shoes on.

  3. Pull the top of the bag upwards, gathering your dress skirt and train inside the bag as you shimmy it up towards your waist.

  4. Once the top opening sits securely around your waist, your dress is completely protected inside.

  5. Sit down, take care of business, and slide the bag straight back down when you’re finished.


Top tip: Tuck two or three pre-cut bin bags into your wedding day emergency kit so they’re ready and waiting in the venue bathroom.



Method 3: The Dedicated Underskirt (e.g., The Bridal Buddy)

If you love the idea of the bin bag method but want a reusable, purpose-made solution, consider a specialised bridal toilet underskirt like the Bridal Buddy (or a sheer, drawstring slip).


Why it works: Worn under your dress like a lightweight petticoat, these special underskirts feature built-in armholes and an elasticated drawstring. When you need to go to the toilet, you simply gather your skirt into the slip, pull the drawstring tight above your bust, and pop your arms through the armholes. It completely holds the weight of your gown up for you, freeing both of your hands to take care of what you need to do.

Method 4: The "Bridal Crew" (Best for Fitted & Corseted Styles)

For fitted silhouettes like a fishtail/mermaid gown, or for wedding dresses with structured corsetry and lower-sweeping button backs, sitting down or bunching fabric can be tricky. This is where calling in your maid of honour or a trusted bridesmaid is unfortunately the easiest route.


Because your helper is doing the heavy lifting of the train and skirt from behind, you don't need to turn around or twist your gown. You can sit on the toilet in the standard position (facing forward, away from the cistern), while your helper supports the weight so there’s no unnecessary pulling on delicate sheer mesh, lace appliqués, or custom seam alterations.


How to do it:

  1. Head to the venue’s largest accessible toilet or family bathroom so you both have plenty of room.

  2. Walk in and stand in front of the toilet facing forward (away from the wall/cistern), exactly as you normally would.

  3. Have your helper stand behind you to gather the train and back of the skirt up to waist height.

  4. Lift the front hem of the gown together, keeping it gathered neatly.

  5. Lower yourself onto the seat facing forward while your helper comfortably supports the weight of the train from behind.
