Find your dream dress by steering clear of these common shopping fails
We understand how the wedding dress shopping experience can feel overwhelming for some brides. And that's why we work so hard to guide our clients through their bridal journey, and not leave them stranded, wondering which path to take. Because there is so much choice out there these days, and information available at the fingertips. Which can lead to confusion, and indecision. Not what you want when you already feel the pressure to find ‘the one’.
If you're beginning to look at wedding dresses, and you're wanting to get the most out of each bridal shopping experience. We've got some hard-earned advice that we know will help you. Five common wedding dress shopping fails that we've seen too many times over the years, and that can be easily avoided.

Not being ready to commit
If you're still in the early stages of gathering wedding dress ideas, we'd recommend starting with the big wedding shows, skimming through magazines, and of course, getting lost on Pinterest. These places are all fantastic sources of bridal inspiration and should be (assuming you have times) properly explored before actually booking an appointment at a wedding dress shop.
If you're not quite ready to place a wedding dress order, it's best to hold off on booking appointments for now. Bridal stock changes so often, meaning what you see today might not actually be available when you're ready to commit. Which is soul destroying to discover, and the last thing we want our brides to experience.
Inviting too many friends
Bring a maximum of two people with you to each bridal appointment. Loved ones that you trust and input you genuinely desire. Which may not be your mum or your best friend, if they are not the most positive or useful people to have present. Choose people based on how they'll add to the experience, rather than your relationship to them.
Most boutiques these days will limit the amount of friends and family you can bring with you, anyway. This might sound harsh, but it really is done for a good reason – and this is to help you be the focus of the appointment.

Not considering different styles
During your bridal research, you may have decided on a specific style or silhouette you believe is perfect for you. Which is great! It's good to get a feel for what you like and don't like. But try not to stick too rigidly to a certain style during your bridal appointment.
Trust in your stylist and try on styles they suggest, even if they're nothing like what you're looking for. Most brides come into the boutique with a list of wants and not-wants, and almost every one of them changes their mind or ends up wearing a style they’d never have thought to try! But this can only happen if you're open.
Being scared of sample sizing
Try not to worry too much about bridal sample sizes, as it's simply not possible for boutiques to stock every dress in every size. Some styles may not fit perfectly, and that’s completely normal. The important thing is how the dress feels rather than how the sample fits.
If the style is right, you’ll usually get that instinctive ‘yes’ feeling. And remember, the sample isn’t your actual dress. Most boutiques are really helpful, so if you’re unsure, give them a call ahead of time — they’ll be happy to talk it all through with you.
Trying on too many dresses
As tempting as it may be, it’s a good idea to keep a cap on the number of dresses you try and the number of boutiques you visit. Plan your time carefully – and try to set yourself a ‘decide by’ date. Remember, too, that many manufacturers set a three or four month waiting time for dresses to arrive. Which should be factored in when working how long to spend wedding dress shopping.
